At
Mannington, all we make is flooring – and we’ve been doing it since 1915, so we
have a pretty good perspective on it, too.
RESILIENT
flooring is also known as ‘sheet vinyl’and has been around for decades.
But it’s certainly not your grandmother’s floor! Today’s technology
allows for extremely realistic replication of natural looks and textures like
stone, slate, and wood. It’s easy to clean and maintain, budget-friendly,
and only Mannington resilient contains recycled content, too.
LAMINATE
flooring is best known for its durability. It’s practically
indestructible, and is a snap to keep clean. And as for style, it also
uses advanced technology to achieve realistic wood and tile looks and textures
that install by just ‘clicking’ together. The wood looks are even more
realistic now that they come in single planks, with texturing and beveled edges
– just like real wood.
HARDWOOD
flooring offers natural beauty and warmth. It comes in a variety of
domestic and exotic species, as well as a variety of widths and
thicknesses. And Mannington manufactures only engineered hardwood floors,
which offer greater dimensional stability than regular wood floors, so they can
be installed on, above, or below grade.
Mannington
Mills was founded, and is still headquartered, in Salem, New Jersey. In
business since 1915 and family-owned for four generations, Mannington and its
associates still operate under the same mission and values set forth by its
founders: To be the best people to do business with in the flooring
industry.
In 1915 John
Boston Campbell and his sons Neil and Kenneth started a little floor covering
company in Salem, New Jersey and operated under the values of hard work, honest
dealing, faith, family and community.
Over the years
they built a solid reputation for being good people to do business with.
So from a small vinyl flooring manufacturer, the company grew, expanded, and
innovated into a multi-national corporation, producing and marketing hardwood,
laminate, porcelain tile and commercial carpet floor coverings, in addition to
vinyl.
But it
wasn’t always easy. Mannington survived two catastrophic fires in Salem,
NJ; a blizzard-related roof collapse at the Mannington Commercial headquarters
in Calhoun, GA; two World Wars, the Great Depression, and several other major
economic downturns.
In all the
years since its founding, the values of hard work, honest dealing, faith,
family, and community that motivated John Boston Campbell still drive daily
life at Mannington, as the company enters the 21st Century still under the
Campbell family’s ownership.
In 2008,
Mannington acquired Burke Industries ( www.burkeindustries.com
), a manufacturer of high-quality resilient products including rubber
flooring tiles, wall base, treads, and accessories. This acquisition
expands and enhances Mannington’s presence in the commercial flooring
marketplace.
Today,
Mannington continues successfully to produce high quality flooring products that
have received numerous awards for their outstanding style and design.
Mannington has also won awards as best flooring manufacturer for many years,
and the two business units of Mannington - commercial and residential - work
together as "One Mannington" to produce top quality flooring products
at four plant locations in Alabama, Georgia, New Jersey, and North Carolina;
and at Burke Industries facilities in Eustis, Fla., and San Jose, Calif.
Third party certifications,
recognitions for environmental leadership and contribution to green building
credits matter to us, as a manufacturer, because they confirm that our
investment in making better products, with better processes, is
working. But they matter to you, too.
First, because they offer
reassurance from independent testing facilities that our claims are true. We
welcome these highly regarded associations and government bodies into our
facilities – in the name of truth and transparency. They look closely at our
products, programs and practices. And when they certify a Mannington product or
reward a program for environmental leadership, it confirms that our
environmental commitments line up with what you expect from us.
The second is because it can benefit
your projects, both commercial and residential. Thanks to rating systems like
the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating systems, you can be recognized
for your actions, your environmental leadership and the responsible design and
construction of your project.
We are proud to have a products and
programs that contribute to environmental rating systems, have been recognized
for environmental innovation and leadership, and are third-party
certified.
ISO 14001 and 9001 Certified

At
Mannington, we believe that how we manufacture is equally important to what we
manufacture.
Conservation has many faces at our company. It begins with the wise use of
energy, water and the habitat surrounding our manufacturing facilities. And
conservation continues with smarter use and reuse of materials, helping us
toward becoming a Net User of Waste.
Energy,
Water & Habitat
Read about our industry-leading use of solar energy and cogeneration to power
manufacturing, our water reduction and cultivation of bird habitats, and
landscaping to benefit the land around our facilities.
The industry’s largest
solar array We have installed more than 2 acres of solar arrays on the roof of our New
Jersey warehouse, and were pleased to learn that this is the largest solar
array in the flooring industry – more than seven times over. More than 700
megawatt hours of clean energy are generated by these solar panels, helping
power our Salem site...we didn’t expand in 2009 as hoped for, but we will
in 2010. Click here to see how much clean energy Mannington Mills is
generating.
Cogeneration
We have also invested in a high efficiency cogeneration system for our Salem
site, using state of the art natural gas-fired engines to generate electricity
for the plants and offices. Using this and other processes such as rerouting
heat generated by compressing air into ductworks helps keep the power and heat
on, while lowering our energy consumption.
Biodiesel
and rail shipping – reducing the use of fossil fuels
We use B5, 5% soybean biodiesel, in our fleets because it burns cleaner and
helps reduce dependence on foreign oil. We also added a spur to a rail line
near our New Jersey plant, to reduce the environmental impact of shipping heavy
limestone for use in our VCT, resulting in an annual fuel savings of several
hundred thousand gallons.
Water
use reduction
Water is a key component in manufacturing every product in our portfolio. We
know that it is a precious natural resource, and so we have worked to reduce
its use in our processes. In 2008 alone, our Calhoun, GA, carpet manufacturing
facilities reduced water consumption by 30% versus previous years.
Some actions are as simple as converting mowed lawns at our facilities to
natural landscaping. Creating wildlife habitats with wildflowers and native grasses
reduces water use and eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers as well as
the wasted energy and pollution created by mowing. The results are both smart
and beautiful.
“The
Purple Martin Project”: Cultivating bird migration for pest control
How are the habitat and housing of birds directly related to product
manufacturing?
Our
headquarters in southern New Jersey is located in one of the region’s largest
tidal wetlands. As a result, there are insects, some of which are attracted to
our product components and become easily trapped in the wet ‘wearlayer’ of the
product, possibly resulting in product defects.
In the
mid-1980’s, a few associates were convinced that there was a more natural
option than pesticides. Thus, we installed houses for Purple Martins, birds
that migrate from Brazil to the United States for the summer months – and that
eat massive amounts of insects.
This “Purple
Martin Project” has proven to be the most environmentally friendly and cost
effective way to deal with the insects. Today, Purple Martins east of the
Rockies are entirely dependent upon man-made houses – which on our property are
found adjacent to the manufacturing buildings. With the help of our birds, and
the continuing use of screens and bug-proof entries, our insect problem is now
more manageable. Creating natural landscape buffers to
stop erosion and runoff
A few years ago, the wetlands adjoining our New Jersey location lacked a
transitional area between land and water, also called a ‘riparian buffer,’ In
nature, these overgrown areas next to a stream or estuary stop erosion and
sediment runoff, provide cover, and offer needed food and shade to fish and
animals.
Along with the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, the US Fish & Wildlife
Service, and local schools we planted more than two hundred native shrubs and
trees alongside Mannington facilities. More recently, Mannington volunteers,
together with the NJ Audubon Society, planted over 400 trees along Mannington’s
property as Phase II of the riparian buffer project, and there’s more to come
this fall!
A
Commitment to be a Net User of Waste
We are committed to being a Net User of Waste, taking in more waste than we
output for disposal. This is not a magic formula, it’s an absolute commitment
to make great products, while using more waste than we dispose. To
reach this goal, we claim waste from other manufacturers and landfill diversion
initiatives. We then increase the amount of recycled materials in our products
– particularly post-consumer waste – by investing in new technology, developing
product designs that can incorporate recycled content and building
infrastructure to capture and recycle post-consumer waste.
We also
decrease the amount of waste that we produce, continually improving our product
formulations and practices to produce flooring as cleanly and efficiently as
possible.
Drywall to Flooring
When we learned about the massive amounts of drywall choking landfills, we
redesigned our Premium Tile to incorporate pulverized gypsum which is claimed from
regional construction sites. We are the only flooring manufacturer
incorporating drywall into flooring.
Sample
return is simple reuse
A simple action can add up to big impact. We offer a postage-paid return label
for every commercial product sample that we ship. So when you are finished with
your project, rather than throwing it into the dumpster, drop that sample in
the mail. We will send it on to the next user; and at the end of its useful
life, we donate samples to local charities, churches, schools and civic groups.
Dematerialization
of packaging
We reuse twelve foot cardboard core tubes from our New Jersey facilities for
our operation in Georgia where they are cut in half and used as shipping cores
for carpet, then eventually recycled. And when shipping tiles and other
product, we have reduced packaging to ship our carpet and hard surface products
through using shrinkwrap – using 90% less materials by weight.
CARE:
the Carpet America Recovery As
commercial carpet manufacturers, we are long-time members of the Carpet America
Recovery Effort, a joint industry and government effort working to reduce
carpet going to landfills through better collection infrastructure and serving
as a resource for technical, economic and market development opportunities for
recovered carpet.
What
we make matters.
Where others say, “It can’t be done,” we invest in innovative product design
and manufacturing processes that keep waste out of landfills, improve closed
loop recycling and reduce environmental impact. Enabling you to stand on a
better world and find choices that work for your residential and commercial
projects.
VCT Reclaimation Mannington’s innovative environmental initiative to reclaim and recycle
post-consumer vinyl composition tile (VCT). Partnering with a regionally based
reclamation company, Mannington is reclaiming post-consumer tile recovered
during the renovation of major regional facilities that are large end-users of
VCT. As part of Mannington’s LOOP program, the construction waste is delivered to
Mannington’s manufacturing facilities in Salem, New Jersey, where we recycle
the tile and incorporate it as post-consumer content into new premium tile.
During the first year, more than 19 million pounds of VCT will be
recycled.
Drywall to Flooring
When we learned about the massive amounts of drywall choking landfills, we
redesigned our Premium Tile products to incorporate pulverized gypsum which is
claimed from regional construction sites.
LOOP™ - what’s old is
new again
Billions of pounds of used flooring finds its way to landfills each year. To
help, we launched LOOP™, which recycles old flooring into new. We take used
flooring (Carpet Tile, VCT…) and recycle hundreds of tons of it each year into
brand new flooring products that contain post-consumer recycled content, such
as Relay™RE, Infinity®RE , and VCT.
Residential Resilient
with Recycled Content
We are the first – and only – manufacturer in our industry to offer residential
(felt-backed) sheet vinyl with recycled content. And not just in one or two
select products, but in our ENTIRE line. Manufactured using an innovative
process that, in part, uses leftover magazines for its recycled content, the
product will prevent more than 4 million pounds of waste to landfill per year.
Vinyl alternative carpet
backing that does more than promise – it performs
rEvolve, our closed loop recyclable thermoplastic olefin modular carpet
backing, contains over 40% recycled content including a minimum of 10%
post-consumer. Designed to be fully recyclable without the enormous expense of
energy required for other carpet backings, rEvolve also meets rigorous
Mannington performance standards, which we ensured through extensive testing
prior to launch.
Premium
rubber flooring
Our premium rubber performs beautifully as floor tiles, wall base, stair treads
and finishing accessories. Launched in 2009, we are already pursuing ways to
incorporate recycled materials into this product line, as part of our goal to
include significant recycled content in every Mannington Commercial product.
Engineered Hardwood – a
more efficient use of resources
Our beautiful hardwood floors use less natural resources (and are more durable)
than solid wood floors, because instead of cutting planks out of each log, we
peel them into sheets, which are bonded together in cross-grained layers,
making it less susceptible to warping, cupping, buckling, and other problems.
Our wood floors are engineered to use half as many trees as solid wood floors,
with more renewable species used for inner piles.
New, improved inks
Our chemists developed new ultra-low VOC inks that reduce energy and eliminate
the use of solvents, yet outperform other inks. Other water-based inks can
contain volatile organic compounds, so we knew there had to be a better way.
Dematerialized
construction flooring
We have developed products with lower face weights, dematerializing the product
and reducing shipping weight, while still performing to our standards. The
tighter loop delivers the same amount of cushioning, noise-reduction and
durability while allowing for easier maintenance.
Rapidly renewable bamboo
Few plants grow as fast as bamboo. This grass is ready to harvest in about five
years, and needs little fertilization or pest control. Add in strength and
durability, and Mannington Bamboo is a natural hard-surface flooring choice.
The planks are similar to those of hardwood, and the bamboo comes in a vertical
or horizontal pattern, and in dark and light color choices.
70% recycled content
laminate Laminate is a popular choice because of its great performance on the floor,
but it also has superior environmental attributes. The core of laminate
flooring is high-density fiberboard made from sawdust, wood shavings and other
wood waste from saw mills and log processors – which is recycled and compressed
into the dense fiber board core. Mannington’s finished laminate product is
generally over 70% recycled content by weight. The visual for our laminate is
printed with water-based inks; the durable finish coat and adhesives are low
VOC content. In fact, our laminate has been certified for indoor air quality
per California Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) guidelines,
third party certified to the FloorScore IAQ program, and complies with
California Air Resources Board (CARB) I and II.

Value Highlights Value 1: We talk
publicly about our environmental initiatives. If our success can help another company succeed, so much the better. And by
the same token, if our disappointments can keep other companies from wasting
their time and resources, it will be better for all of us.
Value 2: We don’t
"greenwash."
We don’t overclaim and we don’t mislead. We simply work hard to do the right
thing.
Value 3: We invest in
technology and resources to assure environmental improvement.
As far as we’re concerned, "good enough" isn’t good enough.
Especially when it comes to the environment.
Value 4: We are good
neighbors.
Our "Good Neighbor" policy is simple and clear: Mannington is
committed to being a good neighbor by ensuring that our business has no adverse
effects on the health and safety of our associates, our customers, local
residents, and the environment.
Value
5: We are good people with whom to do business. It's
as simple as trust, respect, good faith and high standards.
Value 6: We make
continual environmental improvements because it’s the right thing to do. We've always taken the long view. And we’ll always try to do the right
thing.
Value 7: We engage in
constructive discussions on environmental issues. We then move from discussion
to strategy to action. We don't hesitate to speak our minds, create our plans, then roll up our
sleeves and get to work.
Value 8: We meet or
exceed all regulations.
When it comes to environment, safety and health standards, we're not afraid to
be first. And we're not about to play catch-up.
